31 May - 1 June 2003, University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland

The purpose of the symposium is to present and discuss the work, achievements, and views of a distinguished American scholar, Prof. Richard Harvey Brown of the University of Maryland. For many years Professor Brown's deeply interdisciplinary research has involved extraordinarily original and productive work on the complex relationships that exist between social structures, linguistic structures, and literary structures. He also considers the role of the individual in the creation of self, as "self-author" in the context of various and complex social, economic, and political structures. These are issues with a long and complicated history, significantly exceeding the bounds of any one scientific discipline.

Current plans call for an attendance of approximately 50 persons, with 10-12 plenary papers and a transatlantic satellite conference involving American participants interested in making a contribution.

The conference language will be English.

The Symposium will have both a scholarly and celebratory character, as befits the guest of honor, and the program will include speeches and presentations in honor of Prof. Richard Harvey Brown, who has already been named an Honorary Member of the Polish Neuropsychological Society in recognition of his outstanding work in the development of interdisciplinary research on issues that are rarely addressed, and yet of enormous importance, on the border between a number of disciplines, including the neurosciences, the social sciences, and linguistic studies.

During the celebration there will be musical performances by local artists.

We hope that this Symposium will prove to be the starting point for the further development in Poland of the kind of creative and visionary scholarship and science characteristic of the work of Richard Harvey Brown.
